20 Stoner Movies to Watch on 4/20
While lockdown procedures have us limited these days, there’s no better way to celebrate weed’s birthday on 4/20 than with some classic stoner movies! We’ve compiled a list of our favourites so you can ROTFL with some sticky icky realness!
1. Friday (1995)
The birthplace of one of the best stoner movie quotes ever:
Smokey (Chris Tucker) to Craig (Ice Cube): “I know you don't smoke weed, I know this; but I'm gonna get you high today, 'cause it's Friday; you ain't got no job… and you ain't got shit to do.”
How can anyone argue with young Chris Tucker’s logic (and babyface) here? Friday is a MUST watch if you haven’t seen it yet! Even if it’s not Friday - pretend like it is and watch it already 😎
2. Jay and Silent Bob Clerks II (2006)
Cue “Goodbye Horses” as you chuckle at the dynamic stoner duo, Jay and Silent Bob. It was by no means easy for us to pick just one movie by them (so we didn’t) - but we HIGHLY encourage you to watch all of them tbh.
3. This Is the End (2013)
A fairly newer addition to the stoner flick menu - This Is the End’s cast makes this movie. James Franco throws a party with 5 other familiar faces that we adore like Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson (Darryl from The Office). This is one of those movies that is filled with juicy cameos including Rihanna, Channing Tatum, McLovin’, Michael Cera, Hermione, Mindy Kaling, Aziz Ansari and more. Roll a j and watch as the world disintegrates on the outside as these jokers deal with cabin fever and dwindling supplies on the inside.
4. The Big Lebowski (1998)
CULT CLASSIC ALERT⚠️ No one does it better than the original dude himself, the Dude Lebowski. This robe wearing, bowl packing, hairy man is the ultimate hippie hero and giver of zero f***s. How does the Dude abide? “Oh, the usual. I bowl. I drive around. The occasional acid flashback.”
5. Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996)
From the makers of Scary Movie I and II, the Wayans Brothers are back at it again. With a pot-smoking, foul-mouthed grandma and his psychotic cuz from the streets, Loc Dog, innocent Ashtray gets a lesson of a lifetime about life in the inner city.
6. Dazed and Confused (1993)
Alright, alright alright - another cult classic, folks! This movie takes place in 1976 on the last day of highschool. A huge party is about to erupt - from bongs to bellbottoms, this flick brings on all the nostalgia with a spectacular classic rock soundtrack. Btw, this is the genesis of Mathew McConaughey’s career and his life motto “keep on livin’”. Matthew as Wooderson, a chilled out highschool grad, says, "The older you do get, the more rules they're gonna try to get you to follow. You just gotta keep livin', man. L-i-v-i-n." I mean, he’s not wrong...
7. How High (2001)
What happens when you put two multi-platinum recording artists together? A hilarious stoner movie, that’s what! Redman and Methodman have HIGH aspirations of getting into Harvard, in search of bongs and b**ches. The rappers come together to bring you some college grade funnies as they toke and joke along the way.
8. Cheech and Chong’s Up In Smoke (1978)
What kind of list would this be without our beloved stoner grandpa’s, Cheech and Chong? The stoner gods would not permit us to carry on in this list without giving these guys a proper mention. Up in Smoke is one of many stoner comedies that will have you howlin’ for sure, man.
Cheech: “Hey man, am I driving ok?”
Chong: “I think we’re parked, man”
9. Superbad (2007)
Another last day of highschool and huge party type of movie but with a more current twist - Superbad is actually super hilarious. Written by Seth Rogan, McLovin (and his single-named fake ID), Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) navigate the struggles of grabbing party favors as teenagers while trying to score.
10. Pineapple Express (2008)
The tale of an average stoner, Dale Denton (Seth Rogan), and his needy drug dealer, Saul (James Franco) as they find themselves in a sticky situation after witnessing a murder. While fleeing from hitmen and corrupt cops, Dale and Saul will have you chuckling at their unfortunate luck. Roll you a “trifecta joint” before you watch this one!
11. Smiley Face (2007)
Undoubtedly, Anna Faris’ best role as she represents all the stoner girls out there. It all starts with a funky batch of weed cupcakes as Jane stumbles into a series of misadventures all over LA. Side note, John Krasinski (Jim, from The Office) basically looks like Dwight for the duration of this movie 😂
12. The Wash (2001)
From the makers of Friday, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg come together to rescue their boss from a couple of novice kidnappers. Between smoking weed, getting eviction notices and having their car booted, these rappers make working at the car wash hilarious.
13. Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000)
It all starts with stoners, Jesse (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester (Seann William Scott), waking up after a night of partying in search of their car. Debauchery ensues as these dopey guys meet obstacles along the way.
14. Half-Baked (1998)
Half-Baked tells the story of Thurgood (Dave Chapelle) and his group of stoner friends. One of them, in an innocent high daze, kills a police horse by feeding it junk food. The group is then forced to raise funds for their friend’s bail by selling pot illegally.
15. Super Troopers (2001)
With the tagline, “Altered State Police”, you can get an idea what this movie’s going to be like. 5 very ridiculous Vermont State Troopers with too much time on their hands are jerks on the road, looking for pissing contests with local police and are just pure ruckus. As they find their careers may be on the line, these guys find themselves going down a bumpy road. Go and watch this movie right meow!
16. Cheech and Chong’s Nice Dreams (1981)
The grandpa’s are back at it again with Nice Dreams from the 80’s. Keep the bong and loads of weed around as this classic tickles your stoner fancies. Here’s the whole movie on YouTube below:
17. Dogma (1999)
A story about two fallen angels, Bartleby (Ben Afleck) and Loki (Matt Damon), trying to find their way back to heaven after being eternally banished. Written by an infamous stoner himself, Kevin Smith, the crew and hetero life-mates, Jay and Silent Bob, are back at it again with this thought provoking yet funny flick. As stonerdom and theology intersect here, bring enough dank to pass to the left hand side.
18. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)
On the pursuit of happiness, aka White Castle, a boring accountant and his irresponsible friend meet many tribulations as they move about their evening in a munchies-driven craze for mini burgers. May this scene of a Kumar and his weed bag live in your brain forever, rent free.
19. Grandma’s Boy (2006)
This movie is all about video games, bong rips and grandma’s. Finding himself near homeless, video game creator, Alex tells his friends he’s moving in with “3 hot girls” - the reality is that he’s really moving in with his traditional grandmother and her two roommates. As his grandma and her friends are almost always around, this puts a damper on Alex’s social life and pot smoking. Watch as two gamer rivals battle each other in this weed-infused flick.
20. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
Another classic highschool stoner movie; this one is about a group of friends as they navigate sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll in the 80’s. Check out 22 year old Sean Penn as he plays a slacker stoner-dude who’s all about surfing and tokeage in this pop-culture classic
Bonus: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
As an honorable mention, Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro are like the Tazmanian Devil as they decimate Sin City. This drug-filled tale will have you spinning as you follow Raoul, his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, and their red convertible into all sorts of trouble throughout a wild drug binge.
Whichever movie(s) you choose to watch, Thumbs Up Brand wants to wish you a safe and happy 4/20! Keep tokin’ homies 👍
